So You Want to Build a Home Theater? Step 2: Choosing a Screen

There you are, sitting pretty with your new home theater projector. Next step is to pick the right screen for your viewing environment. What exactly do you need to know about choosing a projection screen? Is bigger always better? Can you just blast the image on a white wall?

The short answer is, it depends. Sometimes bigger is simply better. Why settle for 100-inches when you can get 150-inches? And there are some instances when a bed sheet or a white wall will do the trick. However, there are also a range of screens which are designed for easy, portable outdoor usage and provide greater reflectivity than a bedsheet.

There are a few things that may be worth considering if you’re looking for the screen that is the ideal complement to your projector. Projector screen expert and AV enthusiast Jeremy Meyer of Visual Apex has answers to the most frequently-asked questions from consumers looking to build a personal home theater.

Here’s what he had to share:

Q: What are the typical screen considerations for the average consumer?

A: Almost everyone is going for that unique, immersive, big-screen experience when designing their home theater. However, there are several considerations that consistently come up for consumers as they begin the selection process:

  • Viewing Distance: I always caution consumers to be aware of how far people need to be sitting away from the screen before you go big. The bigger the screen, the farther back people may want to sit.
  • Screen Type: Some people are very selective about their screen type – specifically the material and gain. However, around 90 percent of projector screens will work well in an environment with controlled lighting using a Matte White material.
  • 3D Implications: Consumers inquire about the best type of screen for 3D versus 2D content viewing. However, 3D projections work on almost every screen, so there’s no need to buy a special 3D screen. However, there are some screens which will always perform best in specific applications.
  • Durability and Ease of Set Up: People want useful things that are easy to set up and do not require a lot of maintenance. Consumers have a range of review information available online to discern a good screen. Do your due diligence and look at comparable features, as well as company reviews and return policies.

Epson Powerlite Pro L1500, L1505 Laser Projector Review

epson-pro-l1500u_white_head-onEpson sure isn’t the first player with high powered laser projectors.  Panasonic, I believe got the ball rolling perhaps 3+ years ago, and there’s plenty of competition these days, but Epson, long known for having the largest overall marketshare of the projector industry, and by far the most models (over 150 different projectors listed on their website), is now fully committed to large venue solutions, with a full lineup from 6000 lumens to 25,000 lumens.  The feature sets are pretty similar across the lineup but there are a number of differences besides brightness.  The L1505 and L1500 are almost, but not quite as feature laden as these Epson laser projectors get.  But even the lowest end models are well endowed.

Let’s concentrate on the L1500 and L1505 going forward, with just the occasional comment about the others, where they differ.  I will almost certainly review one of the lower powered laser projectors several months from now, probably a 7000 or 8000 lumen projector.

This review is a bit shorter than normal. In part that’s due to our only having use of the L1505 projector for a single week, before having to return it so Epson could show it at Infocomm. (June 2016.)    In fairness, they provided a pre-production sample unit.  If pre-production laser projectors are similar in how they perform compared to full production, then we can expect  production units will have slightly improved color tables (for better color) and perhaps more brightness. As a result we did not do the usual measurements of brightness and color temperature in the different modes.

Even without adjustment, most modes (as is the case with most Epsons, and for that matter most other high end projectors), provided extremely good color performance in line with what we would expect.

Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 review: Epson’s projector is cheap and not too bad

-Epson_2030_35826968-10

The Good The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 offers a lot of features for a comparatively low price; picture quality is acceptable for a budget unit; capable of a fairly high light output without sacrificing color too much; 3D playback is very good.

The Bad Colors are a little unsaturated and black levels aren’t the best at the price, no 3D glasses included, some uniformity issues on white scenes, no lens shift.

The Bottom Line The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 offers a decent image and a good mix of features at a low price, but is still bettered by rivals.

The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 is one the least expensive 1080p LCD home-theater projectors. It also includes a number of features unusual at the price, including 3D playback, MHL compatibility, an onboard speaker, and full color and grayscale controls.

Picture quality is decent for a cheap LCD projector, though the black-level benefits of the automatic iris are still minimal when compared with the DLP picture of the BenQ W1070 and BenQ W1080ST. Color is a little lackluster, and the combination of a long throw and lack of manual lens shift means your placement options are limited. On the other hand, 3D playback is very good, and the Epson’s brightness is powerful enough to be visible in a dimly lit room.

Despite its faults, the Epson 2030 manages to do a lot with only a minimal outlay.

Design

While the Epson 3020 and higher-up projectors have a sci-fi look, the budget models are a little more pedestrian in appearance. The white 2030 shares the same basic chassis as the PowerLite 730HD but adds a beefier lens. Compared with the chunky 3020, the 2030 is much more coffee-table-friendly, measuring 11.69 inches wide by 9.72 inches deep and 4.25 inches high. It has an angled front exhaust port to prevent light from leaking onto the screen — a feature the competing BenQ W1080ST doesn’t offer.

Epson Home Cinema 640 3LCD Projector

496674-epson-home-cinema-640-3lcd-projector

By M. David Stone

The Epson Home Cinema 640 3LCD Projector is low on resolution and lacks 3D support, but it delivers a bright, rainbow-free image for home-entertainment use at a bargain price.

The Epson Home Cinema 640 3LCD Projector ($359.99) is a solid choice as a home-entertainment projector if you’re on a tight budget, don’t need 3D support, and don’t mind having a lower resolution than typical models. Rated at 3,200 lumens, it can throw an image that’s big enough to dwarf any similarly priced HDTV, and bright enough stand up to ambient light in a family room. Even if you already have a top-quality home-theater projector for watching movies, you might want the 640$359.99 at Epson as a second projector that you can move from room to room or set up in your backyard to watch movies outdoors on a summer night.

Quite simply, the 640’s 800-by-600 resolution can’t show the same level of detail that you’d see with 720p, much less 1080p. But it still offers substantially higher resolution than standard-definition television (SDTV), which everyone found acceptable before HDTV and is still the resolution you get with non-HD channels.
