Introducing the DTP2 Series, the Next Generation of Extron DTP Technology

Extron Electronics is pleased to introduce the new DTP2 Series, a family of twisted pair extenders with advanced performance and innovative features. The DTP2 Series accommodates the full 18 Gbps data rate of HDMI 2.0b and supports video signals at resolutions up to 4K/60 at 4:4:4 chroma sampling. These HDCP 2.2 compliant products can also be used for distribution of 4K HDR. The new series includes the DTP2 T 211 transmitter, DTP2 R 211 receiver, and the DTP2 T 212 switcher with integrated DTP2 transmitter, plus an independently assignable local HDMI output. The DTP2 Series is designed for distribution of HDMI and audio, as well as bidirectional RS‑232 and IR signals up to 330 feet (100 meters) over a shielded CATx cable. The compact enclosure sizes and remote power capability make the DTP2 Series ideal for discreet placement in lecterns, beneath tables, behind flat panel displays, or wherever needed to meet application requirements.

“DTP2 incorporates the latest technologies to address continued advancements of digital video signaling and resolutions,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Extron. “These new products enable versatile AV designs while delivering the performance, reliability, and economical approach provided by DTP Systems.”

The DTP2 Series delivers reliable, long distance transmission of video, audio, and control signals. They support data rates up to 18 Gbps, Deep Color up to 12-bit, CEC pass-through, and embedded HD lossless audio formats. In addition to supporting higher video data rates, DTP2 products offer new capabilities. The DTP2 T 212 switcher drives the DTP 2 and HDMI outputs simultaneously with the selected signal. To support local monitor applications, the HDMI output can be assigned to either of the HDMI inputs.

Tips for selecting digital signage displays

The flat-panel display is a highly visible element of digital signage application. During the specification and selection process, it becomes clear that many options exist. This article addresses the selection of flat panel displays for use in interior and outdoor, weather-resistant housings.

End-users tend to not get overly excited over flat-panel selection unless the deployment is large or very high profile to the digital team. Smaller system integrators that are expected to provide trustworthy, fact-based objectivity tend toward recommending the familiar and are advised to assess a wider range of options and models given advancements in flat-panel features. Larger system providers and operators such as Stratacache that provide to Walmart, McDonald’s and other retail, food services and banking end-users, operate lab and testing facilities to ensure the most suitable flat panel display is selected for the end-user application.

The lines appear to have been blurring between consumer and commercial-grade displays with descriptors such as “consumer” or “light duty commercial,” which calls upon a deeper assessment of the available flat-panel options. It is what is “under the hood” that matters most in the cost-benefit decision.

The term “good enough,” defines the relationship between cost and benefit. Cost reflects production, service and mark-up while benefits reflect functionality and expected life.

Tip: The term “meets specification” better suits flat-panel display selection than “good enough.”

While the display device is the most visible element of digital signage, the cost of the flat panel has declined to be a minimal proportion of the total system cost over its life, with content far outweighing any other element.

Too often, the selection decision is made in the same way a vehicle is chosen with a bias toward a brand name (Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, BMW, etc.) and size (sedan, truck, SUV), where appearance and cost greatly influence the purchase decision. Several firms dominate the supply of commercial-grade digital signage flat-panel displays with each offering a range of sizes and operating features, as well as prices that correspond accordingly.

Differentiating aspects are as follows: size, shape, bezel width, thickness, ease of mounting, inputs, integrated processing, display control, brightness, contrast ratio, resolution, image appearance, refresh rate, usable viewing angle, warranty terms, energy conservation capabilities, and reliability of supply.

SW HD 4K – Two and Four Input HDMI Switchers

swhd4k

The Extron SW HD 4K are two and four input switchers for HDMI signals. They are designed for video signal switching between multiple HDMI source devices to a single display. The switchers support video signals at resolutions up to 4K, as well as data rates up to 10.2 Gbps, 3D, Lip Sync, and HD lossless audio formats. Both models feature EDID Minder®, which maintains continuous EDID communication with connected devices and ensures that the HDMI sources power up properly and maintain correct video output. The switchers provide automatic input cable equalization up to 50 feet on Extron HDMI Pro Series cable. The SW HD 4K switchers offer front panel, RS‑232, IR, contact closure, and auto-input switching control options for integration into a wide variety of environments.

To enhance and simplify integration, the SW HD 4K switchers provide integrator-friendly features, including automatic input cable equalization, automatic color bit depth management, indicators for monitoring and troubleshooting, as well as peripheral device power on each output. Automatic input cable equalization corrects for signal loss due to lengthy input cables, ensuring signal integrity up to 50 feet,when used with Extron HDMI Pro Series cable. The switchers automatically adjust color bit depth based on the display EDID to prevent color compatibility conflicts between source and display. Front panel LED indicators provide immediate visual confirmation of HDCP authentication and signal presence for each input and the output. If HDCP‑encrypted content is transmitted to a non‑compliant display, a full‑screen green signal provides immediate visual confirmation that protected content cannot be viewed on that display. The SW HD 4K switchers also provide +5 VDC, 250 mA on the HDMI output for powering peripheral devices such as an Extron UHD4K 101 or HDMI 101 Plus cable equalizer.

The SW HD 4K switchers are housed in 1U, half rack width enclosures that are suitable for mounting in a rack or under a table.
