Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Home Theater Surround System

There are three main components that make up any successful home theater installation – a comfortable viewing experience, comprehensive sound system and dynamic images on your video display.

Creating the best possible environment for your sound to thrive involves certain things, such as finding the right speakers, ensuring they are installed properly and ensuring the room has the proper acoustic treatments.

While hiring the professionals is one of the best ways to ensure this, some other tips that can prove beneficial are highlighted here.

Proper Placement of the Speakers

The first step in achieving superior sound in your home theater is to determine the layout for the space. Some tips to help with this include:

  • Be sure all speakers are equidistance to the viewer to eliminate the possibility of uneven sound. The AV installation team can expertly measure the room and angle and install the speakers the right way to ensure this is accomplished.
  • The purpose of the subwoofer is to add additional bass to your home theater sound system. It’s best to place it near the corner of the room, between your center speaker, and the right or left front speakers.
  • Never place speakers near the wall, as this is going to impact your room acoustics. To keep them out of the way, consider installing in-wall speakers.

Purchase High Quality Audio Equipment

After you have determined the right layout for your home theater installation, you have to select the AV receiver and speakers you want to install. When looking at speakers, make sure to choose ones that match up. Additionally, all speakers need the same power output, and the same volume settings to prevent uneven sound.

If you aren’t sure about what speakers are right for your space, be sure to work with the installation team you have hired, who can provide more assistance.

4 Tips for Creating the Ultimate Home Theater Setup on a Budget

It can be—with some shrewd shopping and ingenuity. Read on to learn how to start creating your own home theater setup on a budget.

Find a Great Television

Obviously, any home theater setup starts with a great television. The good news is, it’s possible to pick up a quality television without spending a fortune.

When shopping for TVs, consider the benefits of buying open box or refurbished. Many are just like new, with no meaningful flaws or drawbacks, and sell for a fraction of the cost. Just think: you could get the centerpiece of your home theater for way less, and spend that money on all your accessories instead!

Is bigger always better?

One thing to be aware of when buying a TV is that size matters… but not in the way you might think. There’s nothing wrong with springing for a big TV, but you should know the size of your viewing space will determine your optimal screen size.

  • For 720p and 1080p HDTVs, your viewing distance should be about twice the width of the screen.
  • For regular HDTVs, the viewing distance is 1.5 times the size of the screen. (So, for example, a 55″ screen works best when you sit about five or six feet from the screen).
  • If you spring for a 4K Ultra HD television, you can get a better viewing experience at about half that distance.

When considering what size TV to get, do the measurements for your own space to see what will work best. While buying a 90″ HDTV for your mid-sized living room might seem like a good idea at first, you may not be pleased with the end result.

Get on the Streaming Bandwagon

One way to save some money on your home theater setup in the long run is to cut the cable cord. You can pick up a streaming media player and stream movies, television programs, and even YouTube videos to your TV for a fraction of the cost of a premium cable subscription. The days of browsing the shelves at Blockbuster may be gone, but thanks to services like Google Play and Vudu, renting movies digitally is inexpensive and easy.

Some home theater enthusiasts recommend going with a PC over a set-top box like the Roku for maximum flexibility, however personally, I consider this a matter of taste. A PC setup gives you more control, but there’s something to be said for the simplicity and hassle-free nature of a device like the Roku, which requires less maintenance and a minimum of fiddling.

How to Build a Home Theater with Hidden Speakers

This article will give you a checklist on how to build a home theater with hidden speakers. If you’re going to do it, I think you should do it right—and that means putting your speakers behind the projector screen.

Step 1 – The Room Matters

Before you can do anything, you need to consider the room. If I teach you how to build a home theater and you think you can do it in a 9 x 9 room with 8-foot ceilings I haven’t done you much good. It’s not that you can’t enjoy a good movie in a small room, but I would never suggest spending excessive money where it’s not needed.

If your room is closed off from the rest of the house—excellent. If not, then set the “boundaries” for the space you’ll use for your home theater. A dedicated room always works best, but you can certainly design a home theater around a shared space. Having a dedicated room with a door allows you to pressurize the room with a subwoofer and get better overall sound by not having to deal with objects and architectural features not related to the home theater.

Take a look at a quick overview of the steps you can expect to take to build a home theater with hidden speakers:

  • Step 1 – Consider the Room (The Room Matters)
  • Step 2 – Plan the Layout
  • Step 3 – Build the Plan (Framing and Insulating)
  • Step 4 – Pre-wire Your Gear
  • Step 5 – Install Your Speakers
  • Step 6 – Dry It In (Install Drywall)
  • Step 7 – Paint & Carpet
  • Step 8 – Trim and Decorate
  • Step 9 – Install Your Seating
  • Step 10 – Calibrate and Enjoy!

Step 2 – Plan the Layout

Once you know your room and your space, begin planning your layout. This includes deciding how to run your speaker wire, HDMI, lighting, and network cables to ensure everything you need gets placed correctly. For tips on setting your speaker positions, check out an article I wrote over at Audiogurus titled Speaker Placement Guidelines and Tips.

We recommend planning for some in-ceiling speakers if you have 9-foot or higher ceilings. That will let you conform to the newest Dolby Atmos surround format. You also want to run a couple HDMI cables from your AV rack to your projector—if only as a backup. HDMI is notoriously unreliable over the long haul. Always use high-quality cables that are spec’d for the highest speed and maximum resolution available. Formats will change and grow and you don’t want to put in all this time and energy and get stuck in the past a few scant years from now.

This happened to a lot of people who put in the original HDMI cables that don’t support 4K resolution. Don’t let that happen to you. The good news is that HDMI will cover just about everything, so there’s really no need to run component video, Toslink optical, or even analogue audio cables from your AV equipment to your projector.

7 home entertainment tech trends for 2014

Sony 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector.Home entertainment has come a long way since the days of rabbit ears and Super-8. So far, in fact, that a lot of younger folks probably don’t even know what rabbit ears and Super-8 are.

(For the curious, rabbit ears were a common delicacy in TV dinners of the 1950s, often consumed while watching the crime-fighting drama Super-8, starring a young Lorne Greene.)

Entertainment and technology are inextricably intertwined, as the recently wrapped Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has once again shown us. From slaying dragons in virtual reality to ultra high-definition porn that will show every bump and wrinkle, here are seven entertainment tech trends that will make waves in 2014.

Sharper screens

This will be the year that ultra high-definition television gains traction, offering four times the resolution of our soon-to-be-obsolete HD TVs. Prices on Ultra HD TVs – also sometimes referred to as 4K TVs – will drop dramatically throughout 2014, just as Ultra HD content finally starts to trickle out. Streaming service Netflix is getting an early jump on Ultra HD, with Season 2 of House of Cards set to be the first series widely available in the newer, sharper format.

Porn purveyors are also eagerly jumping on the Ultra HD bandwagon, although one might wonder if having that much clarity is a good thing when it comes to adult entertainment. Being able to make out every pimple, pockmark and surgery scar doesn’t sound super-sexy.

Throwing a curve

While Ultra HD TV will start popping up all over the place in 2014, OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TVs will continue to take baby steps, appealing mostly to moneyed folks who are after the latest bleeding-edge picture quality. In particular, several TV makers will begin offering curved screens (both of the OLED and the regular LED variety), promising viewers a more cinematic experience.

Curved screens could be the next big thing, or they could be a silly fad that goes the way of 3D TV. Perhaps, with that in mind, electronics giants Samsung and LG are experimenting with flexible TV screens that can go from curved to flat at the touch of a button. Sadly, we’re still waiting for the button that can make a stomach go from curved to flat.

Budget Without Compromise

Building a large screen home ‘theatre’ is probably on many homeowners’ wish list. They are often held back by the prospect of facing a 5 to 6 digit price tag that has so often been acquainted with home entertainment system.

But if it is for the sole purpose of getting up a 100” screen for your “wide-screen” experience in the living room or in your bedroom, you will be pleasantly surprise that it can be done within a few thousand dollars.

The Projector:

Projectors are generally classified into 2 groups. They are Data projectors (also known as video projectors) and Home projectors. The basic projection systems of both groups of projectors are pretty similar but Home projectors are equipped with better video processing and high contrast capabilities. Having said that, it means a much more sophisticated chip-set and lens system, which justify the higher price tags for Home projectors.

However if you are tight on your budget, the latest data projectors (especially those which come with HDMI port) should still give you a pretty decent picture.

Data Projector Price Range: $800 – $2000

Home Projector Price Range: $2000 – $4000

Sound System:

A basic sound system comprises of an amplifier/ mixer and Speakers, which can be readily available for plug and play.

Sound System Price Range: $300 – $1500

Screen:

A matt white screen will do the job. Projection onto a flat wall painted with matt white paint will also do the job.

Manual Pull-Down Screen Price Range: $200 – $500

Find the best possible equipments with your available budget and with the necessary equipments in place, all that is left is to plug in your Blueray, PS3 or Nintendo Wii for the ultimate large screen experience in comfort of your home!

Note:

The prices above serve as an indication only, as different brands and models prices varies.
